This scene has probably played out many times throughout history. A young man from the country has decided to seek adventure at sea. He is still a “seed” of a man and knows little of the world. He has come to a tavern looking to sign on with a ship. There he meets his captain, an old salt who tries to scare him into going back home by telling him tales of the sea. The old man has spent his life at sea and has seen some amazing and horrifying things. Although years of drink may have exaggerated some of his memory, he now has the life of this youngster in his hands and wants to be sure the lad is up to the challenge of life at sea.
